Follow these simple tips about planting and caring for your daffodils to ensure they last for many years.

  1. Daffodils should be planted between late August and November with the best time betweeen late September and the end of October.
  2. Daffodils like most bulbs require a well-drained soil. If planting in borders add a layer of sharp sand underneath the bulbs.
  3. For best effect plant daffodils in drifts (8-10 bulbs). The bulbs should be planted 15 cm apart.
  4. Bulbs should be planted as soon as possible after arrival. If you cannot plant them immediately store in a dry dark place (preferably in a paper bag).
  5. Bulbs should be planted with the pointed part upwards. If in doubt plant the bulb on its side.
  6. Daffodil bulbs do best in light shade to full sun. Avoid planting in deep shade or by south facing walls.
  7. Daffodils should be fed with a high potash fertiliser in the Autumn and again after flowering.
  8. Deadhead the bulbs by pinching just below the seedhead immediately after flowering.
  9. Allow the foliage to die back naturally. Do NOT tie the foliage as this will prevent light getting to the leaves and thus inhibit the production of food for next year's flowers.
  10. Wait six-eight weeks after flowering before cutting back the remaining foliage (generally around the end of May). There is no need to lift the daffodil bulbs.
